Progress from 2003 EO TWG Meeting

Life as a Lizard (Cori, Kat, Craig and Lisa):
• An activity geared towards Arizona 3rd-5th graders
• One classroom tested
• Changes and modifications will be implemented

Ideas Generated from 2004 EO TWG Meeting

Suggested Direction for 2004
Complete Life as a Lizard
• List of materials for activity will be included in activity packet and on webpage (Cori, Kat, Lisa)
• Provide photos and videos of lizard behavior for web page (ASDM Volunteers, Robert)
• Conduct workshops for teachers (for credit?) for easier implementation into the classroom (Cori, Kat, Lisa)
• Workshops will need to expand the activity for more than 3 lectures or across more subjects to inspire teachers to attend (i.e.: include technology and or language arts, create 2-week lesson plan, provide different extension activities for each grade level) (Cori, Kat, Lisa)
• Translate activity into Spanish (Robert)

Urban Wildlife Conflict (including, urban-rural interface)
• Audience
• Kids
• New Arizona residents
• Residents moving to urban-rural interface in AZ, by City and or County
• City, County, Utility employees
• Concept
• Living with Wildlife
• Encourage wildlife you want
• Learn to live with the rest
• Neighborhood Associations
• Develop Packets / Presentations for distribution
• Welcome Wagon (tried by Trevor Hare, would cost $500 - Craig has another route to try this)
• Neighborhood Associations
• Developers
• Look into SAHBA Home Show in October 2004 (table with animals) (Cristina)
• Funding – Write grant proposal to AGFD Urban Heritage (Elissa and Cristina)

AZ PARC Outreach
• Press release (Craig will look into what such things cost)
• Web Links to other organizations
• Join with other “nature groups”
• Provide PowerPoint presentations to Audubon, Sierra Club, and other “nature groups” about PARC
• Earth Day, REI Environmental Fair

Checklist of AZ Herps that people see
• By County
• Tom Brennan and Andy Holycross currently working on Maricopa County
• Cristina will look into Pima County
• John will look into Cochise County
• Produce glossy(?) guide for novice herpers
• Each team member could take 1-2 counties each
• Include status
• Rare / Common
• State and federal legal status

Other ideas (for the future)

• Lizard Surveys & web -based, distance learning
• Develop statewide annual lizard count/survey
• Encourage Kids to do backyard surveys and input data
• Provide species verification from photos
• Compare data from different locales over time

Next EO-TWG Meeting: 14 July 2004, from 4-6 or 5-7 PM.
Elissa will check on the availability of the AGFD Conference room; in case it is unavailable, please think of alternative meeting places.
